Bladen County was placed under a Winter Storm Watch from 7 p.m. Friday night until 7 p.m.  Saturday. According to Meteorologist Steven Pfaff with the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, Bladen County is expected to receive one inch or less of snow and a quarter-inch of ice while locations farther inland are expected to receive higher amounts.

NC Department of Transportation crews have been busy preparing roadways and bridges for the expected ice and snow. Crews have spent Thursday applying salt brine to county’s bridges and roadways.

Pfaff said that rain will start by Friday evening and slowly change over to sleet and freezing rain by daybreak on Saturday and end as snow on Saturday afternoon.

Impacts could include black ice and ice forming on bridges and overpasses. Isolated power outages could also occur.  An arctic air mass will follow bringing dangerously temperatures to the area by Monday morning. Pfaff said Bladen County could well see the coldest temperatures in the area since February of 2015.
