Bladen County will be under a winter weather advisory beginning Sunday at midnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Several periods of freezing rain may produce ice accumulations ranging from one tenth to under two tenths of an inch in areas of Bladen County by mid-morning Sunday, forecasters say.

The advisory is scheduled to end at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Although the winter storm is expected to impact areas to the west of Bladen County more, it’s still expected to bring periods of freezing rain here that will cause icing conditions resulting in hazardous travel and walking conditions. Be prepared for slippery roads and ice covered walkways and trees. Power outages are possible.

Saturday’s weather forecast calls for partly sunny skies with a high near 48, then becoming mostly cloudy Saturday night followed by rain or freezing rain with a low around 31. On Sunday, the rain and freezing rain is expected to continue until mid-morning before turning to rain. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.

Gov. Roy Cooper signed a state of emergency Thursday to activate state resources to respond to the storm and to allow for the possibility of federal reimbursement if the event qualifies.

“This storm will bring significant impacts from snow, sleet and freezing rain in different parts of the state, with likely power outages and travel disruptions,” Cooper said. “North Carolinians should pay close attention to their local weather forecast over the next few days, and make sure they are personally prepared before Saturday afternoon.”

Department of Transportation workers started brining roads Thursday in preparation for the storm.

In addition to freezing rain, two to three inches of rain is expected to fall in eastern NC, potentially leading to minor flooding in poor-drainage areas.

If you must travel, it is recommended to slow down and use extreme caution on ice covered roadways. Also, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

The latest road conditions in North Carolina can be obtained by calling 511.
