Rural counties need citizens to submit their 2020 Census for funding and representation purposes. The 2020 Census is currently being conducted and may end soon. According to Jan Hester Maynor, Special Projects Planner with Lumber River Council of Governments, “We are still lagging in our numbers.”

Maynor stated in an announcement the following percentages of Census submitted:

North Carolina 59%

Bladen County: 46.2%

Bladenboro: 46.6%

Clarkton 41 %

Dublin 30.9%

East Arcadia 45.9%

Elizabethtown 50.5%

Tar Heel 40.0%

White Lake 16.6% (this percentage may be skewed due to vacation homes being counted in total)

Maynor also stated, “There is a possibility that Census operations may end September 30th, a month earlier than what we were expecting. The Census Bureau has not made an official announcement, however, the language on their website concerning the end date has changed.”

National Public Radio (NPR) has an article concerning the issues with ending the census early. Read the article here: https://www.npr.org/2020/07/30/896656747/when-does-census-counting-end-bureau-sends-alarming-mixed-signals

The People of our communities may not receive the proper representation if everyone is not counted in the 2020 Census. Census may be submitted online at census.gov.
