BLADENBORO -Junior Braylen Ollison and senior Cameren Jones combined to score 29 of their 34 points in the 2nd half and keyed a 39-29 surge that carried their Pamlico County Hurricanes to a 58-47 victory over West Bladen in the opening round of the Bladen Offroad Christmas Tournament Wednesday night.

Ollison tallied 14 of his game-high 19 points after halftime, and Jones threw in all of his 15 points in the 2nd half. Sophomore Tariq Barber added 10 points for the Hurricanes, and junior Antoine King chipped in with 8.

Sophomore Chase Williams hooked in a 10-footer, sophomore Hezekiah Adams sank 2 free throws, and freshman Jackson Pait bombed in a pair of long 3-point shots for an early 10-4 West lead. However Pamlico’s Jayden Williams turned a steal into a lay-up, and King cut the lead to 10-8 at the quarter break with a lay-up.

Pait delivered a pass to Chase Williams for a lay-up, and freshman Tylik McCall nailed a 3-point shot to put West up 15-10. Barber tied the game with a 14-footer, but Adams drilled in a 3-ball for an 18-15 Knight lead. However a King bucket and Ollison’s follow shot edged the Hurricanes ahead 19-18 at halftime.

Jones and Ollison teamed up to score 13 of Pamlico’s 17 points in the 3rd period. Chase Williams dropped in a lay-up, junior Andre Moore nailed a 3-point shot and Pait rattled in a 14-footer for West. Adams hit a free throw, and Chase Williams turned a rebound into a 3-point play to narrow the gap to 34-29. However Jayden Williams banked in a basket from the lane for a 36-29 lead at the quarter break.

Chase Williams hooked in a 6-footer to start the final period, but a pair of West turnovers resulted in Hurricane lay-ups as the lead grew to 42-31. Adams muscled in a follow then sent a pass to Chase Williams for a lay-up.

Jones scored in the lane for a 48-35 Pamlico lead, but Pait and Moore knocked down 3-point shots. Pait cashed in 2 free throws, and Adams beat the Hurricane press for a lay-up that sliced the margin to 50-45 with 1:29 left. The Knights regained possession, but a turnover ended the threat, and Pamlico closed the game with an 8-2 spurt.

Chase Williams posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and had 2 blocked shots. Pait also finished with 13 points for the Knights and Adams rang up 12 points and 4 rebounds. Moore contributed 6 points and 4 rebounds.

“Turnovers were the difference,” said Knight Coach Travis Pait. “If you turn the ball over, you can’t win.” West Bladen suffered 18 turnovers in the game – 9 in each half.

The Knights, now 8-2, will play Scotland at 4 p.m. Thursday in the consolation bracket. Pamlico County advances to an 8 p.m. game Thursday night against North Brunswick.
