Bladen County had 27 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Saturday morning, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

On Friday, the Bladen County Health Department reported that a 24th resident had been diagnosed positive for COVID-19.

The person was isolating at home in stable condition, according to Health and Human Services Director Dr. Terri Duncan. Duncan said in a news release that of the COVID-19 cases confirmed in Bladen County that 19 are isolating at home, one is hospitalized and four have recovered.

The pandemic continued to dominate the news in Bladen County.

With summer vacation season approaching, White Lake will adjust some of its restrictions beginning May 8 in regard to rental units, although occupancy will be limited and gatherings of 10 or more will continue to be prohibited.

Waiting until November to celebrate small businesses may be a mistake. Every Saturday may need to be Small Business Saturday to keep small towns alive. There are over seven new businesses in Bladen County that have been affected by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak. Some of the owners were available to talk abut the challenges they face.

Bladen County Schools Superintendent, Dr. Robert Taylor addressed some questions about grades, graduation, and teacher’s pay. The state Board of Education has sent out a grading mechanism that allows students to still be able to move to the next grade. The system allows students to choose a pass, fail, or withdraw from the course grading component or a letter grade that will calculate into their grade point average, according to Dr. Taylor.

Dr. Jason B. Atkinson, Bladen County Schools Chief Technology Officer, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and Director of Federal Programs, clarified the temporary grading system in detail for Bladen County students and caregivers.

In sports, Lumberton’s Pirates were declared the Class 4A 2020 Men’s Basketball State Co-Champions by the NCHSAA Board of Directors following their Spring Meeting. The state championship games were cancelled because of the pandemic. The Pirates are coached by former South Columbus coach Bryant Edwards who is the son of Bladen County native Worley Edwards.

Terrell McDowell

On April 29, the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a shooting on Timber Haven Drive outside of Elizabethtown at approximately 8:55 p.m. Officers arrived on the scene and found that Shawnbrina Renee Thurman had been shot. Her ex-boyfriend, Terrell McDowell, was taken into custody on a charged of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
