Lainey Hughes tripled in the tying run, and scored on Savannah Turbeville’s walk-off double as the Thunder edged the Sandpipers 2-1 in a marathon 10-inning Bladen Recreation 11-12 Softball game Tuesday night.

Winning pitcher Rylee Chadwick pitched all ten innings for the Thunder and racked up a whopping 25 strike-outs. Chadwick allowed 3 hits and walked 3 batters.

Madison Taylor pitched 9.1 innings for the Sandpipers and struck out twelve while allowing 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 hit batters.

Chadwick and Taylor were locked in a scoreless pitching duel through 9 complete innings. Starting with the seventh inning, the game was played with the international tiebreaker rule that puts a runner at second base to begin the inning.

The Thunder loaded the bases with one-out in the eighth, but Taylor worked out of the jam with a strike-out.

Chadwick tagged out a runner attempting to steal home in the seventh inning. The Sandpipers loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but Chadwick struck out 2 batters and retired the next one on a foul pop-up to catcher Mackenzie Singletary.

The Sandpipers broke through in the top of the tenth. Briley Stanley was placed at second base to start the inning. Alyssa Strickland reached base on an error, and Lauren Council walked, before Luz Ramos drew a walk that forced home Stanley with the first run of the game.

Haley Bryan was placed at second base to begin the Thunder tenth. Hughes drilled a triple to rightfield that scored Bryan. After Chadwick walked, Turbeville slammed a double over the centerfielder’s head that drove in Hughes with the winning run.

Hughes, Turbeville, Megan West and Laci Storms connected for one hit each for the Thunder.

AnnaGrey Heustess batted 2-2 with a pair of bunt singles to lead the Sandpiper hitters. Ashlyn Williams had the other Sandpiper hit.

The Thunder improved to 3-0 with the victory.
