Attorney Cynthia Singletary who represents Jeffrey Scott Smith, 45, has contacted media outlets over the weekend claiming that a press release sent out by the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office that stated Smith was charged in a recent Sampson County raid on Internet sweepstakes businesses was false.

The press release in question was submitted to BladenOnline.com on Friday by Capt. Eric Pope of the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office. We have reached out to Capt. Pope, but have not received a response at this time. According to WWAY TV 3, Pope was contacted on Saturday and said the release was actually prepared by the Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) agency.

According to WWAY, Singletary told the station Smith went to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office and Singletary said officials there could not find any information regarding any charges. According to WWAY, Singletary told the station that Smith does not have any business interests in Sampson County.

Smith has faced similar allegations in the past the most recent came in May when the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office raided three internet cafe businesses in the county and another case in 2014 that resulted in a hung jury.
