The Bladenboro Board of Commissioners on Monday approved a bid from Hickman Utilities to install water lines for the concession stand at McLean Park. The bid was for $8,822. Construction of the concession stand should start soon, Town Administrator Melanie Hester told the board later in the week. However, she said, some work at the new recreation facility has been slowed because of wet grounds caused by recent rains.

In other business,

** Approved hiring two seasonal workers for the maintenance department to help with the summer work load. Each position will be for 24 hours per week and pay $7.25 per hour.

** After meeting in closed session, the board approved the hiring of a general utility worker.

** Dismissed action about the satellite fire station building on N.C. 131.

** Approved donations of items from the old Community building to be given to the Bladenboro Historical Society.

** Tabled discussion about the town’s landfill until the May meeting so more information can be gathered.

** Approved the 2014 local water supply plan resolution

** Approved the disposal of surplus property by sealed bids. Among the items are three vehicles, an air compressor, paving roller, finishing mower and a trailer.

** In her report, Hester told the board that construction of the new fire station is on schedule to be completed by July, and that the police department is checking Wateree Park each night after lights were left on overnight recently.

** During the open forum, Donald White expressed concern about the condition of some properties around town that are in neeed of repairs. Hester said the process to have repairs done is in its beginning stages.

The board’s next scheduled meeting is May 11 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public.
