BladenboroThe Bladenboro Board of Commissioners voted Friday to cut about $9,200 in construction costs for the concession stand to be built at Clarence McLean Park.

During a pre-construction meeting with Steve Britt of K&S Builders, the board opted not to use quarry tile, change the counter door to baked enamel, not install electric hand dryers, change framed wall to 8-inch masonry, not use FRP wall sheetrock and brick siding, and change shingles to three tab.

The board also asked Britt for a price quote for a concrete pad only for the picnic area. The original plan called for a shelter for the area.

In December, the board awarded a $123,375 contract to K&S Builders for construction costs for the concession stand, pier and shelter for the picnic area.

Earlier this month, the board voted to delay installing lights on the ball field as part of a request for a change in scope of its Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant. The lighting has an estimated cost of $63,000.

“That does not mean we would not light the ball field in the future,” Town Administrator Melanie Hester said at the board’s Jan. 12 meeting. “It just means that we won’t do so as part of this grant.”

Bladenboro was awarded a $213,000 matching PARTF grant in 2012 for construction of the park. The town was able to use $168,000 as the value of the donated land to offset much of its required $213,000 match. The grant must be completed by Sept. 30.

In another matter pertaining to the park’s ball field, the board agreed to install fencing using Dixie Youth Baseball guidelines, which means there will be about 28 feet between the fence and first and third bases, and 20 feet between home plate and the backstop fence. The backstop fence will be 30 feet wide.

In December, the board approved a $21,850 bid from P & W Fence of Bladenboro for fencing and dugouts for the 200-foot field. The bid included all chain link fencing and gates for a ball field, backstop and dugouts, all safety fence caps, foul poles, and dugout shelters.

The board’s next scheduled meeting is Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
