In Bladenboro, residents businesses and churches alike were beginning to clean up from the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. For many, the flood waters reached heights similar to those experienced in Hurricane Floyd.

Peace Baptist Church was no exception. On Thursday morning, the church yard was filled with water logged books, dampened church pews, and pulpit furniture.

Rev. Buddy Cain said that everything would have to be replaced.

“The church hasn’t been hurt. It’s the building its in that has suffered,” said Rev. Cain.

Rev. Cain said that he has served as pastor of the church for 20 years and the church has been there at least that long.

“It flooded just like in (Hurricane) Floyd. It came to same identical place and we had to tear it all out then,” said Rev. Cain. “The Lord will provide a way for us.”

Rev. Cain said the church members will move forward from this. He said the church is planning to hold services Sunday, but wasn’t sure where just yet.

“If it is fair weather, we can take some chairs outside and have service outside. If not two churches have promised we could use their building,” said Rev. Cain.

Rev. Cain siad he was most thankful that no one lost their life.

“The church is not hurt, just the building,” he said tearfully.
