The Bladenboro Fire Department was the site of a confined space training class this week for Smithfield employees and some Bladenboro firefighters. The class was conducted by Specialty Rescue and Fire Service of Texas.

Those taking part in the class were able to gain skills and hands-on training in simulated situations that depict confined spaces one might encounter such as silos or grain bins.  The class is a 24 hour course that includes such skills as how to set up rope rigging, rigging safety, high angle training, and how to extract someone who is trapped inside a confined space.

A simulation truck was brought to the fire department with various types of crawl spaces.  Crews spent time learning to crawl through the maze of confined spaces wearing all of their turnout gear and air packs.

The idea is to teach the participants how to safely set up and how to get personnel out.
