BLADENBORO – The Bladenboro Historical Society received a $2,500 gift this week from the Monsanto Fund America’s Farmers Grow Communities. This grant was made on behalf of local Bladen County Farmer Jennifer Byrd who selected this non-profit organization. The funds will be put to use for the upcoming 100 year Celebration and 25 year Fun Day event on September 9, 2017, as well as continued restoration work on the Bladenboro Historical Society building, formerly the Bladenboro High School.
President Ricky Walters was excited to accept the grant for the historical society and that Mrs. Byrd chose this non-profit due to the positive impact the organization is making across area farm communities.
Donations through the America’s Farmers Grow Communities began in 2010. In the last seven years more than $26 million has been directed to organizations across rural America through the Monsanto Fund.
Walters leads the Bladenboro Historical Society with assistance from many volunteers. Aside from serving as home to Bladenboro Historical Society, it also houses museums, namely the Town Museum, Craft Room, Genealogy & Research Room, Military Museum, Antique Farm Room, Visual Arts Gallery and a Gift Shop. All of these museums are maintained through donations and grants. There is no cost for visiting this outstanding collection of many mementos from our yesteryears.
Charles Lee, the regional sales representative for Monsanto, said the purpose of the America’s Farmers Growing Communities project is to try to change the image of farmers in America. As Monsanto works with growers, Lee stated the company also wants to assist in growing rural communities.
