Dr. Jason Atkinson

During a special-called meeting on Monday, March 1 the Bladen County school board by a 7-2 vote, formally elected Dr. Jason Atkinson as the superintendent of Bladen County Schools. Atkinson’s contract begins March 15, 2021, through June 30, 2023.

Dr. Atkinson is replacing former superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor, who announced at a special-called board meeting on November 19, 2020, that he would be stepping down to take a job as a Deputy State Superintendent at the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. His resignation was effective January 15, 2021. The Board appointed Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Jason Atkinson as Interim Superintendent effective January 2021.

 

Taylor continued to oversee the operations of the district through January 14. On January 18,  Dr. Atkinson officially became Interim Superintendent.

Atkinson came to Bladen County Schools from Hoke County Schools in July 2013 as the technology director.  He previously worked for Bladen County Schools as a band teacher at East Bladen High School from July 2003 until June 30, 2005.

Upon the retirement in July 2018 of Dr. Tanya Head, Bladen County Schools’ Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Atkinson assumed the additional duties of the K-12 curriculum director and the director of federal programs.  In July 2020, he was appointed assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

Atkinson holds a bachelor’s degree in K-12 music education from UNC-P, a master’s in K-12 music education from UNC-P, a master’s in instructional technology from ECU, an education specialist postgraduate degree in educational leadership from Liberty University, and a doctoral degree in worship studies from Liberty University.  He is currently enrolled in a doctoral degree program in school administration at Liberty University and in the NC School Superintendents Association Aspiring Superintendent Program, Cohort V.
