An issue with a boiler at Elizabethtown Middle School on Tuesday morning led to the evacuation of the school.

Bladen County Schools Public Relations Director Valerie Newton said smoke was seen coming from underneath a door to the boiler room area, which is located behind the school. As a precaution, students were evacuated from the building. Newton said all of the school staff and students are accounted for and safe.

Newton said, “They (fire officials) think there may have been some sort of clog in one of the boiler lines. It was causing the oil and gas to back up into the line and it started smoking and overheating.”

Newton said Bladen County Schools’ maintenance personnel were able to shut off the line and are working to correct the problem.

Students were allowed to return to class at 11 a.m.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department, Elizabethtown Police Department and Bladen County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the scene.
