Boost the Boro, Inc. announced today that the organization will be making two scholarship awards to begin in 2018 in the month of May. Applicants for the Boost the Boro Scholarship must reside in the 28320 area and must provide evidence of such.

According to Don White, President of the organization, based on the applications we receive by the cutoff date, we will be awarding either two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors with a 2.5 or higher GPA or one $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior with a 2.5 GPA or higher, and one $500 scholarship to an adult, non-traditional college student.

The submission deadline is April 27, 2018. Applications and information required will be available through the West Bladen High School academic counselor’s office or it can be downloaded from our website Boosttheboro.org. under the tab BOOST THE BORO SCHOLARSHIP AWARD .

“Our selection committee consists of four very qualified members who will review each of the applications and make the selection, says White. Three of these committee members are educators in the Bladen County system and one is a professional business owner from our community, so I feel certain these selections will be carefully reviewed and the awards will be determined fairly and with a high degree of professionalism.”

“We also have a couple of unique features included in Boost the Boro Scholarship. First, we are allowing a graduating student with a GPA of 2.5 or above to be eligible to apply. Our membership felt this might provide a few more students an opportunity to apply from some assistance who otherwise might be blocked, due to higher GPA scholarship requirements and secondly, we know there are many adults who may have an interest in attending college for the first time or who may be returning so they can gain new skills and perhaps enable them to get a better job or perhaps start a new business in our community. We have a great need for both skilled level workers and entrepreneurs in Bladen County and hope this award might be helpful or encourage an individual to follow a dream they may have.”

“The Boost the Boro award has been on our goals and initiatives list for several years, says White and our Board of Directors and membership feel we are now in a position to make the two $500 awards for the 2018 graduating class. Our intent is to expand these efforts beyond the two awards in the future.
