Both lanes on the southbound US 701 bridge over the Cape Fear River in Elizabethtown have reopened after one lane was closed Wednesday for an inspection.

NC Department of Transportation officials shut down one lane of the bridge Wednesday to allow crews and equipment to inspect work being done on the bridge that has been damaged by debris from hurricanes in recent years. North and south bound traffic had to share one lane of the bridge with NCDOT personnel helping with traffic control

The northbound bridge, which also had been damaged by storms and debris, closed Nov. 21 for work and inspection. It’s expected to remain closed until February, according to NCDOT spokesman Andrew Barksdale.

Traffic on the southbound bridge is two-lane. Barriers and signage have been placed near the bridge to alert drivers of the change in traffic pattern.
