The Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church hosted the Cape Fear Council – Boy Scouts Leadership Breakfast this morning.  Lieutenant General Joe Anderson, Commanding General, of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg was the featured speaker.

Ronald Gooden welcome the crowd by saying, “You are all important leaders in our community and your presence here today certainly indicates what the common goal is for all of us, to raise a generation of young men who will have the honor and integrity to lead their families and our communities in the years ahead. The Boy Scout Program does a great job with providing young people with a program that can help them achieve a helpful life.”

Phillip Little, member of the Boy Scout Executive Board gave a summary of the benefits of scouting. He said, “The scouting program brings a significant value to the young people, their families and many of our area organizations. A couple things I would like to point out, we had 16 boy scouts this year that received their Eagle Scout Award in the Lake District with over 9,500 hours of community work in their Eagle Scout projects. In the council there are over 95 scouts that will earn their Eagle Scout Award this coming year with over 40,000 man hours put into those projects.” He continued, “We’ve had 23 scouting units within the district. We plan to start 10 new units this year.”

The featured speaker, Lieutenant General Joseph Anderson was introduced and stated, “I was an Eagle Scout and being an Eagle Scout very much influenced where I am and who I am today.” Lieutenant General Anderson assumed command of the XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg on June 6, 2013 and he educated the audience on the Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg.

Lieutenant General Anderson urged everyone, “Please stay committed to your youth because as we fight in Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s all about those kids. It’s about giving them a better future.” Mayor Sylvia Campbell presented General Anderson with a key to Elizabethtown. “We are very honored to have you in Elizabethtown. If you ever decide to come back to Elizabethtown and run for Mayor, I will be your campaign manager. You are welcome to come back anytime.”, Mayor Campbell said.

Scouting dollars are invested in our youth with 98% of all the dollars contributed staying here in the local area. Investment in character, camping, and activities are where the majority of the dollars are spent with the Cape Fear Council. The total amount raised today at the breakfast was $19,615 with more donations coming in.

The Elizabethtown Investment In Character Breakfast was made possible by, Bladen County Chairman, Dr. Bill Findt, Event Chairman, Ronald Gooden, and Table Hosts, Dean Alsup, Phillip Little, Greg Martin, Renee Campbell, Danny Ellis and Howell Clark.
