The American Flag, also known as Old Glory, is an iconic symbol of freedom. There are specific etiquette rules to follow when handling the country’s Flag.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has pages dedicated to U.S. Flag etiquette, rules, and guidelines. However, local boy scouts also know how to set the example of how to respect the Flag.

Boy Scouts leader Andy Runion with Troop 600 reported the Elizabethtown scouts conducted a Flag Retirement Ceremony at their last monthly camp meeting.

During a Flag Retirement Ceremony, the Flag should be folded in its customary manner. The fire needs to be relatively large with enough intensity to ensure complete burning of the Flag. Once the fire is ready, the Flag is placed on the fire and individuals may come to attention, salute the Flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a moment of silence. After the Flag is completely consumed, the fire is safely extinguished and the ashes are buried.

Runion said, “We were able to retire 100+ flags with HONOR. I was proud and honored to participate in this ceremony with some great Boy Scouts.”

He added, “We also had parents come out and attend. This was one of the best things I have been involved with while being a Scout Leader with Pack 600 of Elizabethtown NC.”

If anyone has Flags for retirement, the scouts are collecting them at the scout hut, located in Elizabethtown on Scout Lane.

Runion added, “To all parents out there that think their kids would love the Scouts, we are always welcoming new ones. We meet every Tuesday 7 PM.
