DUNN – A 15-3 third quarter spurt propelled East Bladen to a 53-41 non-conference boys basketball victory over Midway on Monday night.

Junior Rasean McKoy drained a 3-point shot and another basket to spark the run. Senior Juwan Baldwin fired in a 3-point shot and a free throw, junior Charles Brown buried a 3-ball, and junior Javant McDowell powered inside for a basket and a free throw as the Eagles built a 34-20 lead at the third quarter break.

The Eagles inside game took over in the final period as Baldwin muscled in a trio of baskets, and McDowell worked the paint for 2 more hoops. Senior Tayshaun Berkeley pumped in a basket and 2 free throws, and McKoy and junior Jacob Priest netted baskets to keep East on top.

McDowell topped all scorers with 13 points for the winners. Baldwin followed with 10 points, Berkeley finished with 8 points, and McKoy added 7 points.

Junior Lefrederick Wooten nailed a 3-point shot, and Berkeley, McDowell and Priest dropped in baskets in the first quarter as the Eagles grabbed an early 10-4 lead.

McDowell powered in a pair of baskets, junior Donevin Keith bombed in a 3-point shot, and Berkeley added a basket to keep the Eagles ahead 19-17 at halftime.

Lane Baggett led the Raiders with 10 points, and Tyler Godwin followed with 8 points.

“The guys played well,” said Eagle assistant coach Jay Raynor. “They really listened to Aking (Coach Elting).” It was Elting’s first win as the East Bladen head coach.

East Bladen, now 1-1, will travel to Whiteville on Tuesday, December 3.
