LAKE WACCAMAW – Seniors Tyree Burney and Donovan Worley combined for 31 points to lead East Columbus to a 58-50 Three Rivers Conference boys basketball victory over West Bladen Tuesday night.
Burney topped the Gator scoring with 16 points, and Worley followed with 15 points. Teammate Alterek Simpson finished with 10 points.
Simpson and Burney dropped in 2 baskets each in the first quarter, and teammate Branden Brown hurled in a 3-point shot for a 14-5 Gator lead at the quarter break.
Senior Jaheim Lesane popped in a basket and a free throw in the first period for the Knights. Junior Tyre Boykin threw in a basket and 2 free throws in the second quarter as the Knights rallied to within 19-15.
The Gators scored the final 4 points of the half to extend their lead to 23-15. Worley rang up 3 baskets and a free throw in the quarter.
Boykin nailed a pair of 3-point shots and tossed in a basket and a free throw to spark a 13-9 Knight rally that began the second half and trimmed the margin to 32-28. Senior Kerron Washington popped in a basket and a free throw.
Burney tallied 3 baskets to key an 8-0 Gator run that closed the quarter and opened up a 40-28 lead. Simpson sank 4 free throws and another basket in the final quarter, and Burney and Worley contributed 2 baskets each in the final period.
Boykin fired in a 3-point shot, two more baskets and 4 free throws to lead a fourth quarter Knight rally. Sophmore Shyron Adams buried a 3-point shot and another basket in the period for West.
Boykin led all scorers with 26 points for the Knights, and Adams followed with 7 points. Lesane and Washington totaled 5 points each.
The Knights, now 0-2 in the TRC and 2-3 overall, will host South Robeson Friday night.
