ELIZABETHTOWN – North Brunswick pulled away with a 28-point final quarter and defeated East Bladen 68-52 in non-conference boys basketball action Wednesday night.
The Scorpions only led 40-37 after three quarters, but Devone Beatty threw in a pair of 3-point shots and a 2-point basket, and teammate Robmell Lowery connected on 6 free throws and a 2-point basket to spark the North rally.
As a team the Scorpions made 12 of 18 free throws in the final period. The Eagles sank 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter. Senior Adonis Avery and Messiah Leach both made all 4 of their free throws in the period.
The Eagles edged ahead 13-11 in the opening quarter as senior Sincere Smith dropped in a trio of baskets, Messiah Leach drilled in a 3-point shot and junior Keshaun Davis tossed in a pair of baskets.
Davieon Trillo-Nixon scored 4 points, and Beatty hurled in a 3-point shot for the Scorpions in the quarter.
Three more baskets from Smith and one each from Robert Cooley and Leach kept the Eagles ahead 23-22 at halftime. Two baskets each from Lowery and Jirem Bullock pulled North to within one.
Beatty threw in a 3-point shot and a 2-point basket in the third period, and Larry Aikens and Trillo-Nixon chipped in with 2 baskets each as the Scorpions took the 40-37 lead.
Avery bombed in a 3-point shot and pumped in a pair of 2-point baskets for East in the quarter. Davis drained a 3-point shot, and Cooley and Smith added 2 points each in the period.
Smith topped the Eagle scoring with 14 points before he fouled out. Avery followed with 13 points, and Davis and Leach finished with 9 points each.
Beatty racked up a game-high 16 points for North. Lowery and Trillo-Nixon tallied 12 points each, and Aikens totaled 10 points.
East Bladen will host Fairmont Friday night in a Three Rivers Conference game.
