DUBLIN – A 26-6 third quarter blitz propelled West Bladen to a 75-42 non-conference boys basketball victory over Union Wednesday night that was the Knights first win of the season.

Senior Scott Bowen flipped in a floater, and junior Jaheim Lesane buried a 3-point shot for a quick 5-0 Knight lead. Bowen tossed in a runner, freshman Shyron Adams drilled in a 3-pointer from the corner, and sophmore Tyre Boykin put back a rebound to boost the West lead to 12-3.

Junior Drew Harris banked in a turn-around, and after Union rallied to within 14-10, Bowen nailed a 3-point shot from the right corner to keep the Knights on top 17-10 at the quarter break.

Senior Jimmy Williams and Boykin bombed in 3-point shots to begin the second quarter, and Boykin scored on a follow shot as the West lead grew to 25-10. Bowen turned a follow shot into a 3-point play that padded the lead to 28-12 midway the period.

Union rallied and closed the quarter with a 13-4 run that trimmed the margin to 32-25. Harris banked in a turn-around, and Boykin scooped in a lay-up to keep the Knights ahead at halftime.

“We didn’t move the ball during the last 5 minutes of the half,” said West Bladen Coach Travis Pait. “We took some bad shots and that was because we didn’t move the ball.”

Lesane and Boykin buried 3-point shots to start the third period for the Knights. Harris turned an assist from junior Keshawn Lewis into a lay-up, and a Lesane pass led to a lay-up by senior Jonathan Robinson.

Bowen spun to the basket for a lay-up, and Lewis bombed in a corner 3-ball. Junior Kerron Baldwin-Washington stole the ball and tossed in a floater to grow the lead to 49-27.

Lewis added a lay-up, Boykin turned a steal into a 3-point play, and Lesane sank a free throw and a corner 3-ball for a 58-31 West lead at the quarter break.

Baldwin-Washington and Boykin pumped in 3-point shots, and Adams and Robinson netted lay-ups as the lead grew to 68-37. Junior Jason Moore banked in a shot and hit 2 free throws, Lesane made a free throw and junior Jackson Norris tossed in a jump-hook for a 75-41 lead.

Boykin topped the Knight scoring with 18 points. Bowen finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Lesane racked up 11 points and 4 steals. Robinson grabbed 7 rebounds, and senior Gerardo Reyes and Adams totaled 6 rebounds each.

The Knights connected on eleven 3-point shots in the game led by Boykin and Lesane who both sank a trio of 3-point shots.

“I thought we played good basketball in the second half,” said Coach Pait. “We are going to turn the ball over some because of the way we play. I can live with some turnovers as long as we move the ball.”

Derrick Smith led the Spartan scoring with 17 points.

West Bladen, now 1-3, will return to Three Rivers Conference play Friday night when they host East Columbus.
