WHITEVILLE – Amani Best fired in 12 of his 15 points in the second half to lead Whiteville Central to a 39-35 Waccamaw Middle School Conference boys basketball victory over Elizabethtown Monday night.
Central’s Will Fisher threw in 7 of his 12 points in the first quarter as the Hornets built an 11-6 lead. Darius Williamson tossed in 3 first quarter free throws, Dominick Collins hit 2 free thows, and Jaylen Suggs made one for the Cougars.
Williamson rallied the Cougars in the second period with 2 baskets and a free throw, and Chris Harding popped in a basket as Elizabethtown tied the game 13-13 at halftime.
Best opened the third period with a 3-point shot and 2 other baskets as the Hornets moved ahead 26-23. Williamson sank 2 baskets and 2 free throws, and Collins pumped in a basket and 2 free throws for Elizabethtown.
Best kept the Hornets ahead with a trio of fourth quarter baskets. Collins drained a pair of 3-point shots and 2 free throws for Elizabethtown, and Williamson dropped in a basket and 2 free throws.
Williamson led all scorers with 18 points, and Collins finished with 14 points. D. J. Shipman tallied 8 points for Central.
Elizabethtown, now 1-5 in AA Division play and 1-6 overall, will travel to Tar Heel Tuesday.
