WILMINGTON –Wilmington Hoggard scored the final 11 points of the game to defeat West Bladen 60-52 Tuesday night in non-conference boys basketball action.

The Knights took a 42-38 lead into the final quarter, but an 8-4 Hoggard run produced a 46-44 lead. Junior Tyre Boykin put back a rebound to pull West even 46-46 at the 3:09 mark.

Sophmore Shyron Adams and senior Kesean Lewis sank free throws to keep the Knights ahead 50-48. The West lead grew to 52-49, before Hoggard rallied behind Trey Clucas and Kris Gibbs who combined for 15 points in the final quarter. The Vikings took the lead 54-52 with 46 seconds on the clock.

Adams topped the Knight scoring with 14 points. Boykin and senior Jaheim Lesane added 9 points each to the West Bladen attack.

“We played well enough to win – we should have won,” said Knight Coach Travis Pait. “We took some bad shots late, but overall we played well – only had 8 turnovers in the game.”

Lesane, Boykin and junior Trashawn Ballard bombed in 3-point shots in the first quarter as the Knights battled the Vikings to an 11-11 tie.

Ballard and junior Nolan Bryant fired in 3-point shots in the second period, and Lesane tossed in a pair of baskets as the Knights edged in front 27-26 at halftime.

The Vikings scored the first five points of the second half to take a 31-27 lead, but Adams and senior Kerron Washington buried 3-point shots to rally the Knights. Adams stole an in-bounds pass and dropped in a lay-up then added another basket as West built a 42-38 lead at the quarter break.

Clucas, a sophmore, led all scorers with 23 points for Hoggard. Sabastian Haidera followed with 13 points, and Gibbs finished with 9 points.

The Vikings made 10 of 13 free throws in the final quarter to finish 13 of 17 at the foulline for the game. West Bladen connected on 3 of 5 free throws in the game.

The Knights will host Union Friday night in another non-conference game.
