Brayboy

By: Valerie Newton

Chosen by her peers at their Principal’s Leadership meeting, Bladen Lakes Primary School Principal Priscilla Brayboy will represent Bladen County as the 2016-20107 Principal of the Year. She succeeds Kimbrie Esters, Tar Heel Middle School principal and the 2015-2016 Bladen County Principal of the Year. Brayboy begins her duties as the county-level Principal of the Year on July 1, 2016.

Each year in the spring, principals nominate one of their fellow colleagues as the Bladen County Principal of the Year – POY. With qualities such as instructional leader, innovative problem solver and nurturer, Bladen Lakes staff and students benefit from Brayboy’s guidance.

Brayboy has created a welcoming environment at the school for parents and continually seeks ways to engage parents not only in the academic success of the school’s students but also strives to expose students to social and cultural opportunities. Recently at the schools Mother’s Day Gift Shop for students, Brayboy could be found manning the check-out and helping students to find just the right gift for their mom. The school has also held a multi-cultural fair and has implemented the national Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students) program for dads, granddads, brothers, uncles, pastors, and any positive male role model in a child’s life. At the launch night of the Watch D.O.G.S program the school had well over 300 men in attendance.

A Bladen County native, Brayboy attended Bladen Lakes as a first-grader the year the school opened and transferred to Bladenboro Middle School as a middle school student. She attended East Bladen High School, graduating in 1989.

Brayboy received her undergraduate degree in business administration from Fayetteville State University. It was at that point in her life when her own child entered school that she felt a calling to the education world.
