Raleigh — The N.C. Department of Transportation will replace a multi-barrel culvert damaged by Hurricane Matthew with a bridge in Cumberland County.

The culvert is located on N.C. 53 near Jessups Pond, close to the Bladen County line. The road is known locally as Cedar Creek Road.

S & C Construction LLC of Wilmington was awarded the $1.2 million express design-build contract. The express design-build method allows for faster project construction and completion by combining design and all other preconstruction activities with the actual construction into one contract. That in turn means a single point of accountability for the project. It also means

the department can avoid cost inflation and shortens the time drivers may be inconvenienced by the construction work.

Work can start as early as Jan. 30, with the project wrapping up by June 15.
