FAYETTEVILLE – Southern Lee defeated East Bladen 5-1 Tuesday in the Bulldog Invitational Baseball Tournament at Terry Sanford High School.
Richard McCollum singled and scored a run in the Southern Lee third inning.
Freshman Zach Meares led off the East Bladen third inning with a single but was forced at second on freshman Freddie Wooten’s fielder’s choice.
Senior Sincere Smith hammered a triple to rightfield, but Wooten was thrown out at the plate. Junior Greyson Heustess knocked in Smith with a single that tied the game 1-1.
The Cavaliers took the lead with a run in the fourth on a hit, a walk and a fielder’s choice. A single and an error produced two more runs in the Southern Lee fifth inning. The Cavaliers added a run in the sixth.
Sophmore Gabe Barber batted 2-3 with 2 doubles to lead the East Bladen hitters. Heustess also finished 2-3 at the plate with a double and an rbi, and junior Spencer Scott batted 2-3. Smith tripled and scored a run, and Meares contributed the other Eagle hit.
Junior Pierce Melvin started on the mound for the Eagles and pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 5 runs – 2 earned – on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out one. Junior Holden Clark worked a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief and allowed a hit and a walk.
East Bladen will travel to South Columbus Tuesday night.
