With rain in the forecast for Thursday night into Friday morning, the Cape Fear River is expected to reach minor flood stage by Christmas Eve, according to the National Weather Service office in Wilmington.

A flood warning is in effect for the Cape Fear River at the William O. Huske Lock and Dam No. 3 near Tar Heel. At 2 p.m. Thursday the river was reported at 40.77 feet and flood stage is 42 feet. The river is expected to crest at 48 feet on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

A flood warning is also in effect for the Cape Fear River at Elizabethtown. The river was reported to be at 22.3 feet at 7:48 a.m. Thursday. Flood stage is 25 feet.The river is expected to crest below 28 feet. 

The Cape Fear River at the William O. Huske Lock and Dam No 1 near East Arcadia was reported to be at 20.86 feet at 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Flood stage is 24 feet. The river is forecast to remain below flood stage, according to the National Weather Service.
