As Bladen County continues to recover from the ravages of Hurricane Florence, Cape Fear Valley-Bladen Healthcare is continuing to make repairs and upgrades to the maternity department.

“For the first time in a long time, we don’t have a New Year’s baby. However, we are very excited about being able to re-open (the maternity department) soon,” said Ashley Dowless, a spokeswoman with Cape Fear Valley-Bladen Healthcare.

According to Dowless, the hospital’s maternity ward is currently closed and undergoing repairs and upgrades after damages received to the building in Hurricane Florence. She said hospital officials plan to meet this week with contractors for an update on the work being done.

Dowless said plans are in the work for a re-opening celebration but no date has been announced yet.

In the meantime, mothers who are about to deliver their babies are being referred to Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville.
