Hallsboro Road wreckA woman was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and a tractor-trailer overturned near a pond Wednesday morning on N.C. 211 near Hallsboro Road outside of Clarkton.

The woman, who was driving a 2003 Nissan, was headed west on N.C. 211 about 9 a.m. when her vehicle crossed the center line and struck the cab of the tractor-trailer, according to N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Hammonds.

The truck, which was filled with wood chips, struck a guardrail and rolled down an embankment, landing upside down at the edge of the water. A wheel off the truck was standing straight up near the guardrail. A gas tank was sitting on the other side of the road. The driver was able to climb out of the truck, according to witnesses. He was taken to Bladen County Hospital.

The Nissan’s front was crushed and its engine flew into nearby woods from the impact of the crash. However, the woman was able to be removed from the vehicle by Bladen County emergency personnel. A medical helicopter landed on the road nearby and the woman was taken to Wilmington.

Identities of the drivers have not been released. The investigation is continuing, but Trooper Hammonds said the driver of the Nissan will be charged with driving left of center.
