Obie Sterling Ellison born in Carver’s Creek was a shining example of what a citizen should be in a community. Ellison was born in 1914, the sixth of thirteen children to William Alton Van Buren Ellison and Lessie Hall. The family attended Carver’s Creek African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and the children attended local schools.

Taking his public education further, Ellison attended Columbia University and New York University.  He was certified in Business and Executive Management by New York University.  He joined the U.S. Army where he earned three medals of commendation, served several years, and was honorably discharged for his service.

After his service with the military he became a rising leader in the Free Masonry.  For over 52 years he was a dedicated and beloved member rising to the 33rd Degree in the ranks. Ellison resigned from his service as the Most Puissant Sovereign Grand Commander five years before his death.

Ellison retired from the New York City Transit System and later the New York business community.  He returned to North Carolina and was a leader in Christian Education for the Cape Fear Conference. He was also a loyal member of Carver’s Creek A.M.E. Zion Church. Ellison received many awards for his services as a Fraternal and Religious Leader. Ellison departed from this world in May 2009, but left behind his legacy and his words to live by, “The past gives us experience and memories; the present gives us challenges and opportunities; the future gives us vision and hope.”
