The Bladen County Department of Social Services’ Child Protective Services Unit has planned A Child Abuse Awareness event to take place on Saturday, April 29, beginning at 1 p.m.

The event will kick off with a Child Abuse Awareness Walk. Folks who wish to walk are asked to gather at San Jose Restaurant in Elizabethtown by 1 p.m. The walkers will travel down Broad Street and the walk will end on the front lawn of the Bladen County Courthouse.

“Once everyone reaches the courthouse, we have plans to organize a couple of different activities,” said Child Protective Services Director Jill Sampson. Some of the activities will be the reading of survivors’ stories and the release of a balloon for each child in North Carolina that died as a result of abuse or neglect.

During a presentation at the recent Bladen County Commissioners meeting, DSS Director Vickie Smith said, “We need to protect our most precious commodity, and that is our children.”

The Commissioners presented a proclamation to Smith naming April as Child Abuse Awareness month.
