BOILING SPRINGS – Former East Bladen star Chris Cromartie had 2 big tackles late in the final quarter as his Campbell Camels won their 3rd straight game 42-28 over Gardner-Webb Saturday in the East/West Barbecue Bowl.

After Bryant Barr’s 8-yard touchdown run vaulted the Camels in front 35-28 with 3:53 left to play, Cromartie dropped GW’s Narii Gaither for a 2-yard gain on 2nd down then teamed with Dorian Jones to stop Gaither a yard short on a 4th down play with 3 minutes remaining to regain possession for Campbell.

On the next play C. J. Freeman raced 23 yards for the clinching touchdown and a 42-28 Campbell lead with 2:38 remaining.

Cromartie finished with 3 tackles – 2 solo – and now has 16 tackles – 5 solo – for the season.

Barr ran for 97 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Campbell ground attack, and quarterback Wiley Hartley threw for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns. Caleb Snead snared 1 of the Hartley TD passes and totaled 98 yards receiving.

The Camels, now 2-0 in Big South Conference play and 3-2 overall, will host 25th ranked Monmouth Saturday at 1 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
