The town of Bladenboro filled with excitement on Friday evening as locals gathered at the Bladenboro Farmer’s Market for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. New Light Church offered cookies and hot cocoa, and Santa and Mrs. Claus collected letters and Christmas wishes.

Terry Nance, President of Boost the Boro, Inc., welcomed the crowd and reminded those in attendance to practice COVID-19 safety guidelines.

He thanked the decorating committee for all their work in the town throughout the year. “If you see decorations around town… and it isn’t on a light pole, they did it. Thank you for decorating in all seasons,” Nance said before passing the microphone.

Cara Beth Lewis, North Carolina Senior Beta Club Secretary, emceed the festivities. Lewis said, “We are so glad you all could come out tonight!” Then she introduced Galeed Baptist Church Pastor, Rev. Brett Young, for the invocation.

On behalf of Boost the Boro, Inc., Charles Ray Peterson presented Bladenboro Police Chief William Howell with a check for $500 to help with their annual toy drive.

Peterson said, “I get to do the fun part, I get to give the money away.”

Chief Howell said, “Thank you, Boost the Boro and everyone who made this possible.” After he thanked the local non-profit, he confirmed his department would accept donations for the annual toy drive through next week.

 Entertainers also took the stage.

Miss Dublin Peanut Festival, Alyssa Bell, and Guitarist Savannah Lee charmed the audience as they sang in harmony, O’ Silent Night. On a lighter note, Oral Cheshire brought some Elvis to the stage with his Blue Christmas version. Before Mayor Rufus Duckworth led the spectators to the tree, Tina and Kaitlin Davis wrapped the entertainment up with a few favorite Christmas carols.

As the evening grew darker, Mayor Duckworth, with his granddaughter, Sophia, in tow, brightened the night with the Christmas Tree’s lighting.

The event was sponsored by Boost the Boro, Inc. and New Light Church. Donations for the annual toy drive may be presented to the Bladenboro Police Department until Friday, December 11. The annual Christmas parade was canceled this year due to COVID-19.
