IMG_0934The iconic City Sandwich Shop located at 122 South Poplar Street, Elizabethtown, opened for business on Monday morning to the delight of many Bladen residents. The restaurant’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 5 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The restaurant was once owned by former Elizabethtown Police Chief Charles Taylor. The new, modern City Sandwich Shop, while located in the same building, features an updated interior and menu that is sure to delight the most discerning palate.

“We tried to keep the original menu, but just update it,” said owner James Leech.

He said that when he was designing his menu he incorporated ideas and suggestions from those who dropped by while he was working on the building. Leech described his menu as “country with a splash of city.”

He said the two most popular menu items have been the Reuben sandwich and the Chicken Bacon Ranch wrap sandwich. Other menu items include a selection of salads, hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, and wrap sandwiches.

The menu also features breakfast plates including a selection of pancakes, eggs, grits, and toast as well as fresh baked muffins, breads, smoothies, hot and cold coffee drinks, and frappes.

Leech, who originally hails from Littlefield, Texas, said he came to Bladen County to care for his parents and fell in love with it and decided to stay.

Leech said he got his start in the restaurant business at 16 years old when he took job as a dish washer. He said that he attended Johnson and Wells University’s culinary school and then spent 7 months in Italy training as a chef.

Leech said he has wanted to teach culinary classes and he will be teaching the upcoming Cake Decorating course at Bladen Community College.
