About a dozen or so people, most wearing bright, yellow T-shirts, could be seen walking through neighborhoods in Clarkton on Saturday on an ideal morning for a 3-mile stroll.

It wasn’t only to get some exercise with friends. The group helped the Clarkton Lions Club raise $426 in the 8th annual Strides: Lions for Diabetes Awareness Walk, it was reported Tuesday at a club meeting at the Clarkton Fire Dept.

All proceeds from the walk are donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Lions Clubs around the world organize Strides events in their communities to heighten awareness of diabetes and its complications and to provide information on preventing and managing the disease.

This year the Clarkton Lions Club moved the walk from early November to early October in hopes of better weather.

The Clarkton Lions Club meets the second and fourth Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarkton Fire Dept. on Peach Street. The club is seeking new members who are interested in serving the community.
