Jonathan BaldwinJonathan Baldwin of Clarkton has pled guilty to an attempted robbery of a Family Dollar store in Whiteville and been sentenced for up to nearly five years in a prison, District Attorney Jon David’s office announced Wednesday.

On Nov. 3, Baldwin entered the Family Dollar store on Madison Street in Whiteville, tossed a bag to the cashier, pointed a loaded .38 revolver towards her, and demanded that she put money in the bag, David’s office said in a news release. The employee pled with Baldwin to not hurt her. When another customer approached the store, Baldwin fled. He was quickly captured by officers with the Whiteville Police Department.

Baldwin was sentenced to between 38 and 58 months in prison by Judge Douglas Sasser in Columbus County Superior Court on a charge of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

“Mr. Baldwin committed a violent act that is deserving of a substantial active sentence,” Assistant District Attorney Heath Nance said. “I appreciate the hard work of law enforcement and I credit the successful prosecution of this case to our partnership with the Whiteville Police Department.”
