Mrs. Kelly Mize received the Phoenix Award this week for outstanding treatment of a patient in cardiac arrest who made a full recovery. Mrs. Mize is the wife of Jimmy Mize and the eldest daughter of Rusty and Gail Marsh all of Clarkton.

“Our Horry County Fire Rescue Phoenix Awards are presented to the team members who carry out life-saving work that provides positive outcomes for the people of Horry County. It’s a great privilege for our HCFR Command Staff to be able to present these awards to the individuals involved, and honor their dedication to their communities,” Horry County Fire Rescue announced.

This week, Horry Fire Chief Joseph Tanner and other members of Command Staff were able to make these presentations at Finklea Fire Station 6, in Loris South Carolina.

The department explained the team’s rescue efforts leading to the award. In mid-October, our crew from Battalion 4 was dispatched to a call where a patient was in cardiac arrest. Picking up where a family member had left off in providing CPR, responding crews utilized an AED to convert the patient into a normal cardiac rhythm.

They continued in their statement, “Because of our crew’s response in providing early CPR, defibrillation and pre-hospital care in a tremendous display of teamwork, the patient was soon back with their family in a positive outcome.”

“Great job to all involved!” The statement added.
