CLARKTON – Lee Barnes and Matthew Kemp teamed up to pitch a 3-hit shutout and strike out 8 batters to lead Clarkton School of Discovery to a 10-0 Waccamaw Middle School Conference baseball victory over Tar Heel.

Barnes started and struck out 7 batters while allowing 3 hits and a walk in his 4 innings on the mound. Kemp struck out one in his hitless inning of relief.

Nyquan Richardson, Lee Barnes and Samaj Dove all walked in the Clarkton first inning and Jake Futrell was hit by a pitch. Dove’s walk forced home Richardson with the first Blue Devil run.

Garrett Dunham lined a double to left to start the Blue Devil second inning, reached third base on an error then stole home to pad the lead to 2-0.

Dove reached base on an error in the CSD third inning, stole second and third base then dashed home on a passed ball. Dunham and C. J. Jones drew walks, stole a base each and raced home when Richardson smacked a single to centerfield.

Richardson sprinted to third base on an error and scampered home on a passed ball. Barnes drew a walk, and his courtesy runner, Kemp dashed home when Parker Greene walloped a double to leftfield that pushed the lead to 7-0.

Richardson walked to start the Clarkton fifth, advanced on an error and galloped home when Barnes ripped a single to left. Greene blasted a double to left that scored Kemp, the courtesy runner for Barnes. Greene advanced on an error and scored the game-ending run when Maison Brooks slapped a single to rightfield.

Greene slammed the 2 doubles, drove in 2 runs and scored one to lead the CSD attack. Dunham doubled and scored twice. Richardson, Barnes and Brooks added one hit each. Richardson had 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in, and Barnes, Brooks and Dove had one rbi each. Kemp scored twice, and Dove and C. J. Jones scored one run each.

I’Keir Murchison, Jordan Bryan and Jordan Underwood connected for one hit each for Tar Heel. Murchison started on the mound and worked 2.2 innings, allowing 7 runs – 2 earned – on 3 hits and 9 walks while striking out six. Destin Montgomery pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up 3 runs – 2 earned – on 3 hits and a walk while striking out three.

Tar Heel will host Hallsboro Thursday, while Coach Robert Mazur’s Blue Devils will travel to Whiteville Central on Tuesday, April 16.
