Bladen County native Alvin Thompson, Sr. and his son, Alvin Thompson, Jr., are members of the Wake County Cowboys Pop Warner football team that are competing in the Pop Warner Super Bowl this week in Orlando, FL.

Alvin, Jr. is 9 years old and is the starting center on the team that is composed mostly of 10 and 11 year-olds. Alvin, Sr. is the head coach and Roderick Brown is the offensive co-ordinator.

The Cowboys from Apex have won all 12 of their games this season and won the Pop Warner Division 3 Jr. Pee Wee Regional Championship in Virginia Beach on November 25th to qualify for the Super Bowl.

Coach Thompson shared that the Cowboys did not win a game last season but have now qualified for the play-offs for the first time ever.

Bladen County sports followers will remember Coach Thompson as the head coach of the East Bladen team that won the NCHSAA Class 2A State Men’s Basketball Championship in 2001.

The Super Bowl play-offs will continue through December 9th. The Cowboys play their first game at the ESPN Wild World of Sports complex Monday at 10 a.m. against the Rockford Renegades from Rockford, IL.
