A trio of Bladen County basketball stars are off to strong starts for the 2018/2019 season.

East Bladen grad Lacey Suggs opened the season with a 16-point performance to lead her UNC-Wilmington Lady Seahawks to a 74-58 victory over Belmont Abbey. Suggs has averaged 8.4 points, 3 steals and 3.6 rebounds per game as the Lady Seahawks have posted a 4-1 record.

Senior guard Rahu Purdie poured in 21 points to lead his Lander Bearcats to a 75-71 season-opening victory over Anderson. The West Bladen grad fired in 22 points in an 85-82 loss to Livingstone. Purdie is averaging 14.2 points and 2.6 assists for the 1-4 Bearcats.

Sophmore John Bowen tallied 13 points and 8 rebounds for his Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a season-opening loss to Wingate. Bowen sparked the Crusaders to a 77-58 win over Coker with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. The 6-8 center contributed 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks in an 85-78 win over Johnson C. Smith. Bowen is averaging 8.3 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks for the 5-1 Crusaders.
