Columbus County Community Farmers Market will officially open for the 2019 season on Saturday, May 11, at 8 a.m. and the ninth annual Farmers Market Fun Run & Walk will be held on that morning.

“We’re excited to see another beautiful spring in Columbus County,” said market manager Susie Rockel.  “That means we should be a good variety of locally grown, farm fresh produce on opening day,” she added.

Highlights of the 10 a.m. Opening Day ceremony will include a ribbon-cutting, remarks by local elected officials, and a flag raising ceremony by a local Boy Scouts troop.

Rockel anticipates that vendors will have lots of locally grown, farm fresh vegetables including green peas, squash, onions, cucumbers, radish, spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard, new potatoes, plants, arts & crafts, baked goods, eggs, jams, jellies, and more!

The Farmers Market Fun Run & Walk will also be held on Saturday, May 11.  “The Farmers Market 5k Fun Run & Walk has grown steadily over the past nine years, and we are especially excited to continue the partnership we started last year with YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina in hosting the event,” said event coordinator Rachel Smith.

On-site event registration and check-in opens at 7 a.m.  The kid’s fun run will begin at 8:45 a.m. and the adult 3-mile fun run/walk starts at 9 a.m.  Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers at the end of the event at the Farmers Market.  Participation in the kid’s fun run is free; the 3-mile fun run/walk is $10 per person online and $15 on-site.  Race t-shirts are available for an additional charge.  For more information and to register, visit www.fmrun.com.

Because of the Fun Run & Walk, US Hwy. 701 Bypass at Government Complex Road will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 7 a.m.  Participants and farmers market patrons must enter onto Government Complex Road from US. Hwy 701 Business and should inform the parking attendants if they are participating in the Fun Run or shopping or vending at the Farmers Market.

The Columbus County Farmers Community Market is located at 132 Government Complex Road in Whiteville, near the Department of Social Services.  Hours of operation are Saturdays from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m.  For more information, visit www.columbuscountyfarmersmarket.com or call (910) 840-6743.
