Adam Brent Bass was sentenced up 128 months in custody Monday in Columbus County Superior Court after being found guilty of breaking into the home of an elderly woman in the early morning hours of Aug. 22, 2018.

Bass was sentenced to between 96 and 128 months by Judge Douglas Sasser for first degree burglary and related charges, according to a news release from the Columbus County District Attorney’s Office.

According to testimony, deputies responded to a burglary call at a home off Old Lumberton Road on Aug. 22, 2018. Bass broke into the home of an 81-year-old woman between the hours of 1:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. The woman, who was not identified in the release, was asleep when a window was broken.

Bass, wearing a hoodie and armed with a hammer, demanded money and the woman’s car keys, according to testimony. Bass drove off with the woman’s car.

The woman contacted the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office.

Soon after, a motorist called in a suspicious vehicle in the parking area of Oak Dale Baptist Church, testimony showed. Deputies found Bass running from the area. He matched the description of the man provided by the victim of the home invasion.

Bass was found with cuts on his arms consistent with gaining entry to the home through the window. The car was found to be the woman’s vehicle that had been stolen. Blood found inside the vehicle matched that of Bass.
