Columbus County shooting results in homicide

Clarendon, NC – On July 12, 2019, at approximately 11:40 am Columbus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) Deputies were dispatched to the 2100 block of Walter Todd Road in Clarendon in reference to shots fired. Upon arrival, deputies located Timothy Tyrone Riggins, 31, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

CCSO Deputies quickly secured the scene.  CCSO Investigators arrived shortly after to interview witnesses and to conduct an extensive crime scene investigation.  Columbus County Sheriff’s Office discovered another gunshot victim was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital by private vehicle. A CCSO Investigator responded to the hospital to follow up with the second victim and to further their investigation.  Several homes in the immediate vicinity of the incident were struck by stray rounds but after a canvas of the area, no other victims were struck by the discharged rounds.

Deputies searched the woods in the surrounding areas and deployed the CCSO K-9 to assist with the search.  Columbus County Sheriff’s Office received numerous calls in reference to suspicious persons and/or vehicles following the incident.  All leads were investigated and are still being followed up on.

This does not appear to be a random act of violence but an isolated incident that unfortunately resulted in the loss of a life.  Sheriff Greene wants to remind the public that it is important to pay attention to what is going on around you and to call 911 if you see anything suspicious.  This investigation is ongoing.
