The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Monday night and voted to approve a new position for the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.  The new position is a Training and School Safety Officer. Commissioner Michael Cogdell cast the lone “no” vote.

Captain Jeff Singletary told the board that position will be partially funded by the Bladen County Board of Education.  Singletary explained that Sheriff Jim McVicker will place the current part-time trainer in this position.

Singletary said some of the duties this officer will perform include speaking with the school principals, reviewing safety plans at each school, speaking with teachers and staff and providing training.

Singletary said the Sheriff’s Office would benefit from having one more officers in the schools.

Also, Singletary said the Sheriff’s Office has increased its outreach with churches through the Church Security Program and this position would help with the school system.

The board voted 8-1 to approve the measure.
