The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday night due to the Easter weekend, and recognized 12 employees for their years of service, two retirees and issued three proclamations. 

The Commissioners began the evening by issuing a proclamation in honor of National Public Safety Telecommunicator’s Week. Members of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office telecommunications office accepted the proclamation. 

The next proclamation was in recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month. Accepting the proclamation were Jill Sampson and Vickie Smith with Bladen County Department of Social Services.

The Commissioners also presented a proclamation naming the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness month.  Accepting the proclamation was Abby Williams who is the Sexual Assault Victim Advocate with Families First, Inc.

The Commissioners recognized Janet Miller who retired from the Bladen County Department of Social Services on April 1. She was presented a plaque recognizing her retirement. 

“Janet (Miller) has been one of my right hand ladies in the agency,” said Bladen County DSS Director Vickie Smith.

Smith also recognized Miller’s family for their support of her career.  

Miller spoke briefly, thanking everyone for their support. 

The Commissioners recognized Captain Jeff Bridgers who retired from the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office on April 1. He was presented a plaque recognizing his retirement. 

Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVickers spoke briefly and praised Bridgers for his service.  Bridges also thanked everyone for their support.

The Commissioners also recognized 12 county employees who were in attendance for their years of service to the county. 

Recognized were Teresa McLean with five years of service to Bladen County DSS, Sherry Dowless with 15 years of service with Bladen County DSS, Lisa Allison and Rhonda Caballero each with 20 years of service with Bladen County DSS and Marie Yvette Ross with 25 years of service with Bladen County DSS; Sally Thomson with 20 years of service with Bladen County Environmental Health; Darlene Bowen with five years of service with Bladen County Housekeeping Department; Susan Guyton with five years of service with the Bladen County Public Library; Patti Yandle with 20 years of service to the Bladen County Sheriffs’ Office Communications; Greg Bullard with 10 years of service with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office; Sharon McDowell with 10 years of service with the Bladen County Detention Center; and Robert Grimes with five years of service with the Bladen County Water Department. 

Other county employees who were recognized for their years of service to the county but were unable to attend were: Sabrina Bedsole with 10 years of service to the Bladen County Department of Social Services; Matthew August with 10 years of service with Bladen County EMS; Alisha Evans with 20 years of service with Bladen County GIS; Angela Stanley with 20 years of service with the Bladen County Health Department; Brandon Britt with 10 years of service with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office; and William Dove with 10 years of service with the Bladen County Detention Center.
