The Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Monday and heard from Keep Bladen Beautiful President Sondra Guyton. She was joined by Steve Melson.

Guyton updated the board on the committee’s activities and three grants the committee has received to work on projects in the county. Guyton told the board tht on Saturday, Les Litter attended the Dublin Peanut Festival and plans are in place for Les Litter to attend the Fall Festival to be held at Jones Lake State Park on Saturday, October 29.

Guyton told the board that the committee received three grants this summer from Duke Energy and Keep North Carolina Beautiful in the amount of $500 each.

The first grant is a Beautification and Greening grant in the amount of $500 and will be used to purchase plants to beautify the entrance to the Brown’s Creek Bike Park and Brown’s Landing Lock and Dam No. 2 located on East Broad Street.

A Recycling and Waste Reduction grant in the amount of $500 was awarded to raise awareness about recycling and waste reduction by sponsoring an essay contest for 6th grade students this coming spring. The $500 will be used to provide first, second and third place prizes.

A Litter Prevention and Roadside Cleanup grant in the amount of $500 which will be used to purchase an adult sized recycling bin costume. He will be given the name Recycle Ben. He and Les Litter will travel together or separately as needed to help promote litter reduction and recycling in keeping Bladen County beautiful.

Guyton said the Keep Bladen Beautiful committee would like the public to invite Les Litter and Recycle Ben to their community events or if Keep Bladen Beautiful can assist your organization in planning a cleanup or beautification project. Guyton may be reached by calling 879-5643.

In other business, the board heard approved several items presented by Bladen County Department of Health and Human Services Director David Howard.

The first item was the renewal of an agreement with UNC-Wilmington to have nurses come to the Bladen County Health Department to perform their clinical rotation for public health. This item was approved.

The second item was an agreement with Bladen Community College to have their nurses also perform clinical rotations for public health. This item was approved.

The third item is a short term agreement with the Columbus County Health Department. Howard told the board the agreement is temporary since the health department has lost its family nurse practitioner.  Dr. Susan Aycock currently works with the Columbus County Health Department as that agency’s FNP. Howard said there is language that allows Bladen County an out if the health department hires an FNP. The item was approved by a vote of 7 to 2 with Commissioners Charles Ray Peterson and Jimmie Smith casting the two no votes.

The board also approved a new service code and current procedural terminology (CPT) code.

The board approved a renewal agreement with Care Coordination for Children (CC4C).

Howard also presented the board a Memorandum of Agreement with Bladen Community College. Howard explained that this is part of the Young Families Connect program. The board approved the measure.

The board also approved an agreement with Community Care of the Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

The board approved an addendum to the FY 2016-17 Bladen County School Health Agreement. Howard said the agreement outlines and details duties of the school nurse. 

Howard presented a three contract with Stanbio Laboratory. It was approved by a vote of 7 to 2 with Commissioners Charles Ray Peterson and Daniel Dowless casting the no votes.
