The Bladen County Commissioners learned about the plans for the Summer 2018 Healthy Bladen Kids Recreation program on Monday night.

Bladen County Health Department Health Educator Marianne Valentiner and Bladen County Parks and Recreation Director Grant Pait made a presentation to the Commissioners regarding the kids recreation program. The program included information presented to the kids about healthy eating choices and staying active. The kids also took part in physical activities as well.

They noted that last year, the camp site in Tar Heel had some days where there were no campers. Valentiner added the participation overall last year was strong and plans have been made to continue the program this year.

The locations for this year’s program will be East Arcadia School, Bladenboro Middle School, Elizabethtown Middle School, Clarkton School of Discovery, and Tar Heel Middle School. The hours for this year’s program will be 9 a.m. until 12 noon. The camps will be offered over a four week period beginning June 25th and ending the week of July 4th.

This year there will nutrition education offered by the Bladen County Health Department staff at each site once and Bladen County 4-H will be offering STEAM and SNAP education at each site once,

Valentiner said the campers will have a new form to be completed by the parents that will include such features as food allergies. Also new this year, instead of serving a breakfast and lunch at each site, the sites will, instead, offer a snack.
