Co Commish HeavenridgeThe Bladen County Board of Commissioners met on Monday night and heard from Bladen County School’s Coordinator of Support Services Robert Heavenridge regarding the Bladen County School Facility Needs Survey.

Heavenridge told the board that the facility needs survey is a document that the NC Department of Public Instruction requires school districts to complete every five years.

He told the board that the document shows the current capacity and the average daily membership. The document also shows such things as utility costs, building construction history, number of mobile units, and capacity totals based on the number of classrooms and/or the size of media center and cafeteria.

Heavenridge asked the board to turn to the page that discusses Booker T. Washington School. Heavenridge explained that the commissioners will see such things as the number of buildings, the different additions that have been built, the utility costs for operating the school, the number of students in grades 1-3 and 4 and 5.

He told the board that, based on the report, Booker T. Washington’s capacity is 311 students but the school actually has an enrollment of 197 students.

“The media center can serve 533, the dining room can serve 491,” said Heavenridge reading from the report.

He told them that based on the report, Booker T. Washington could hold more students.

“At this time Dublin and the two high schools are both near their capacities,” said Heavenridge.

According to Heavenridge, the report must be approved by both the Board of Education and the Bladen County Commissioners.

The board approved the report.
