County Board of Commissioners and StaffBladen County commissioners announced at their Tuesday meeting that two special meetings are planned over the next couple of weeks and third is expected soon.

The Bladen County jail project will be the topic of discussion at a special meeting on January 27 at 2:45 p.m. in the commissioners meeting room. On February 9, a meeting is set for any commissioner who would like to attend to learn more more about property taxes. That meeting is planned for 6 p.m. in the same meeting room.

Another meeting is expected to be added soon to discuss issues related to the Department of Social Service.

Commissioners approved several increases in fees related to services provided by the local Health Department. Some others were related to increases from the state for their services. According to a letter from Dr.Scott Zimmerman, Director of NC State Laboratory of Public Health, a new Well Water Testing Fee Schedule is in place. The new well water testing fee is $74. The new state fees for analyzing water samples goes from $2 to $23,

Local fee increases include:

Septic system repair permit goes from 0 to $50.
Improvement Permit ..from $75 to $100.
Construction Permit from $75 to $100.
Construction Authorization from $75 to $100.
Revisit or 2nd trip for inspection goes from 0 to $40.
Migrant Housing inspection will cost $50 for first unit and $15 for each additional
Improvement Permit (site evaluation) from $150 to $200.
Private Well w/New Paid Full IP from $150 to $200.
Well permit from $200 to $250.

According to local Health Department officials, there has been no increase in environmental health fees since 2007.

At Tuesday’s meeting, an appointment to the Division on Aging Advisory Committee was tabled.

Gary McMillan was reappointed to the Hickory Grove Fire Department Firefighters Relief Fund Advisory Board.

Keith Willis and Susan Carter were reappointed to the Library Advisory Board.

Paul Evans was named to the Personnel Advisory Board and Levy Welch was appointed to the Elizabethtown Planning and Zoning Commission (ETJ) and Elizabethtown Board of Adjustment.

The board adopted Rules of Procedure for commissioners, approved a Closed Session Policy and adopted a Respectful Workplace Policy before entering into a closed session to discuss an industrial/’economic development issue.

Lisa Byrd, interim Bladen County Hospital CEO and Sheriff Jim McVicker attended the meeting.
